About this piece

Nearly six feet of iron and copper, and no one was ever meant to throw it.

The Igbo of Nigeria made this spear currency in the 20th century. Across West and Central Africa, iron forged into tools, blades and spears was used in bridewealth and important exchanges rather than in combat. The long, slender shaft ends in a leaf-shaped point. Midway, thin rods bow outward to form an open, cage-like bulb, and copper wire winds in tight bands along much of the shaft. The patina is dry and reddish brown.

On a black base. Station it beside a doorway and watch visitors slow down.
