About this piece

Nineteen inches, and thin as a rumor.

This Kissi penny was forged in iron in Sierra Leone in the 20th century. Twisted rods of this type served as currency among the Kissi and neighboring peoples, and were exchanged in marriage arrangements and other important transactions. A thin twisted shaft carries a small knobbed end on one side and a flattened, T-shaped blade on the other. The surface is rust brown and irregular, with the slight undulations of hand forging.

Light, delicate. Pair it with a few others and see how many ways one form can go.
