About this piece

One large round eye. A broad mouth, and teeth carefully cut.

Koma figures have been found in burial mounds in northern Ghana, where they were placed in connection with the dead, though much about their original meaning remains uncertain. This terra cotta figure dates between the 13th and 17th centuries and stands eight inches tall on its stand. The conical body rises to a head with a thick raised band beneath.

The clay is a warm reddish brown, rough and pitted from long burial, with crisp detail still preserved around the face.

It still has opinions.
