About this piece

Cavalry once mattered in the region south of Lake Chad, and the horseman remains a favorite subject of Kotoko casters, who work small figures by the lost-wax method.

This bronze one was cast in the 20th century and is pierced for suspension, made to be worn or hung. The horse becomes a lively abstraction, with four claw-like legs, a long arched neck and an open muzzle. A tiny rider sits upright behind a twisted rein, and a round opening at the chest serves as the suspension loop. Bright golden highlights show where it has been handled.

Hang it at the window. Let it ride the light.
