About this piece

Bronze, heavy, worn on the wrist, spent on a bride. Not an unusual week.

Among the Lobi of Burkina Faso, heavy metal bracelets were adornment, a form of currency, and protective or shrine objects. This open cuff, cast in the 20th century, is three inches across, thick and rounded, ending in two squared, flattened terminals.

A fine beaded line runs around the outer edge, and a small cast creature with raised limbs sits on the front. The bronze is a soft gold, with a mellow, slightly mottled patina and smooth wear on the high points.

Jewelry, savings, and charm. A good day’s work.
