About this piece

A horse drawn like a line drawing, in iron, by a Lobi smith in Burkina Faso. Sketch first, forge after.

Small metal figures went on shrines dedicated to protective spirits, and riders evoke strength and the ability to travel and intercede. This one, 20th century, is five inches in both height and length. The horse has long arched legs, a lean body, an upturned head. The rider sits upright, holding a twisted rein that loops to the muzzle, his head small and alert in a pointed profile. Dark iron, dry and slightly rusted.

Intercession, on horseback. Quick, and quite sure of itself.
