Lobi Iron Maternity Figure

Straight legs, flat feet, a child cradled diagonally across her chest. She holds her ground.

Lobi shrines in Burkina Faso held such figures as intermediaries between the household and protective spirits. This maternity figure, 20th century, stands a little over six inches in metal. A wrap is tied at her hips, and ringed bands circle her upper arms and ankles. The face is narrow, with a strong brow and a small chin. The surface is dark, with traces of green and a worn sheen where hands have been.

Rigid, tender, and absolutely unmoved by fashion.
