About this piece

Wax first, then metal, and the wax is never seen again.

Senufo metalworkers of Ivory Coast cast compact figures by the lost-wax method, and the mounted rider was a familiar way of expressing standing and authority. This one dates to the 20th century and measures three inches. The horse is built of simple rods: a tall neck sweeping forward into a hooked head, a long tail arching down to the ground, ribbed bands wrapped around legs and chest. The slender rider sits upright with a pointed crest, holding the reins in banded hands.

The surface is dark and worn, flecked with rust-brown.

Three inches. Lean in.
