About this piece

Fourteen inches across and made of copper. Wear it, and you will know you have it on.

This heavy torque is from the Republic of Congo, made in the 20th century. Massive neck rings like it were worn as a sign of wealth and status and also circulated as currency, especially in bridewealth exchanges along the Congo River trade. The ring is open, with thickened ends, and the surface carries a warm, aged copper color.

A neck ring that doubles as a bank account. Hang it on a wall and it makes a very good circle.
