About this piece
Open triangle, ringed collar, a shaft that ends in a needle.
This carved wooden textile hanger was made in the Republic of Congo in the 20th century. Cloth mattered a great deal in Central Africa, and even practical wooden implements made for it could be given a finely worked terminal. Here the finial is an open, triangular loop with incised decoration along its rim, followed by a ringed collar of carved bands. The shaft is long and even, swelling slightly before tapering to its point, thirty-five inches in all.
The wood is warm reddish-brown, satiny, with fine signs of use.
