About this piece

Two and a half inches of iron. Small enough to close a hand around.

Among the Dogon of Mali, the blacksmith holds a special position, and the little figures he made were kept for personal and protective purposes. This one kneels, legs folded into rounded loops beneath the body. The brow is pronounced. The chin juts, bearded. One arm curves around behind the back. Twentieth century.

The surface is dark, flecked with pale and greenish deposits, and looks like it has been handled. Set it on a shelf at eye level. Small things keep the best secrets.
