About this piece

A tall spiraled headdress, a twisted rope rein looping to the horse’s curling head. Kotoko casters in Chad liked their detail.

Working in the lost-wax method, Kotoko artists produced small horsemen and other figures that were worn, kept or exchanged, and the mounted rider is one of their most recognizable images. This one was made in the 20th century and stands under three inches tall. The horse’s body is banded with fine incised rings, and its four legs taper to points. A warm reddish-brown patina with worn highlights covers the surface.

He holds the reins. The reins hold the horse. The rest is up to the bronze.
