About this piece

A man’s body, a bird’s head, and one hand raised to the beak. Whatever he is about to say, he is thinking it over.

The Kotoko live along the rivers south of Lake Chad, and cast small figures and ornaments in brass and bronze by the lost-wax method, many carried or worn as personal charms. This miniature was made by Kotoko casters in the early 20th century. Under four inches tall, it has a beaked head with round, bulging eyes. The other arm extends outward and the long legs stand slightly apart. The bright golden metal is touched with spots of green patina, and a square black base mounts it.

Neither man nor bird, and entirely at ease.
