About this piece

Dozens of rectangles, pieced together, and backed in felt to go on a bed.

The panels are from Kuba tcaka, or dance skirts, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the textile is 20th century. The Kuba Kingdom was created in the 17th century when nineteen separate ethnic groups were united under one king, and its raffia cloth, made for dress and display at dances and funerals, became one of its celebrated arts. Each section is embroidered with linear mazes, interlocking angles, concentric squares and arcs in soft tan on an ivory ground.

Eight by nine feet.

Quiet pattern, in large quantity. Over a sofa, it simply takes charge.
