About this piece

The horse, in Dogon art, was a sign of wealth and authority.

From Mali, early 20th century, a bronze rider follows one of the most enduring Dogon subjects. The horse is long and lean, with a high arching neck, a narrow head marked by a ridged mane, a sweeping tail, four slender legs.

The rider sits very upright, a block-like head projecting forward in profile with an open mouth. A dark gray-black patina with a slightly crusty texture covers the surface. Four inches long, just over three inches tall.

Posture is half the message.
