About this piece

Every household in Senufo country wanted a stool, and every stool began as one block of wood.

This one, four-legged, was carved in the Ivory Coast in the 20th century and used every day, at home and in the fields. The seat is broad and gently dished, its corners softly rounded, with a saddle-like curve. Four thick legs taper toward the floor.

About two feet tall and more than two feet wide, low-slung and generous. Faceted adze marks run down the legs. The warm brown surface shows long use, and the seat is worn smooth.

Sit down. It was made for exactly that.
