Congolese Wood Textile Hanger

A rod, a point, a small carved head. The household needed little else for cloth.

Thirty-five inches of wood, from the Republic of Congo, carved in the 20th century. It was an everyday object, for hanging or holding cloth. The rod runs long and narrow, tapering gradually to a point. At the opposite end sits a small carved head, encircled by grooves and fiber binding. The surface is a dark, smoky brown with lighter streaks along the grain, rubbed smooth over time.
