Wall Mirrors

A carved lattice, and in its middle, a pane of glass. Antique wall mirrors include Chinese window-frame mirrors in elm, where old lattice surrounds the glass; Moroccan frames inlaid with camel bone; Indian and Indonesian frames in teak and mahogany with marquetry, carving or paint; and French, English and Japanese mirrors from the 18th century on, with crescent and circular contemporary forms.

Hung above a console or a washstand, a wall mirror pulls light deep into a room. A lattice frame against a dark wall seems a window in its own right. The view, for once, is of the room.
