Fashion Jackets & Outerwear

The Manchu magua, a standing collar, a row of knotted frogs. Jackets and outerwear in silk, cotton and fur follow traditional Chinese and Japanese lines. The Tang jacket, or tangzhuang, takes its standing mandarin collar, straight front and knotted frog closures from the Manchu magua of the Qing dynasty, and became a staple of Chinese dress in the 20th century. Silk brocade, quilted cotton and fur trim give these pieces body and warmth. Hung on a peg in an entry hall or folded at the foot of a bed, a well-cut jacket in old silk carries the same tactile pleasure as an antique textile. The collar does the talking.
