Paintings on Canvas
First light on a coast that does not quite exist. The horizon is wide, the shapes are simple, and the mood is exact.
Brian Sindler’s paintings on canvas are landscapes rendered as feeling: open country, shorelines and harbor towns built from shape, color and light rather than exact topography. He studied traditional figure painting at the American Academy of Art and The School of Representational Art before a friend’s invitation to paint outdoors turned him toward plein air work. He paints in acrylic and oil, often distilling a hundred sketches into a handful of finished pictures, with a palette limited to white, yellow, two reds and blue. Dawn and dusk tones recur, pushed warmer or cooler than nature would allow.
The broad, settled horizon suits a long wall, above a sofa or facing a window where daylight shifts the color through the afternoon.
