Prints
Tuscany, 2008. A painter works in gouache, and the hills come out flat, chalky and entirely believable.
Brian Sindler’s prints are limited-edition archival pigment prints published by PRIMITIVE Modern, among them the Tuscany Suite, a set of six drawn from gouache paintings he made that year after the Italian countryside. Gouache gives the source images their flat, chalky light and clear blocks of color, and the pigment prints keep that matte, velvety surface. Sindler, a landscape painter trained in the figure at the American Academy of Art, builds each picture from shape and color rather than detail, so the images hold their presence at modest scale.
Framed as a run along a stairwell, or hung two by two in a narrow hallway, the suite reads as one continuous view, a summer journey in sequence.
A short trip. No luggage.
