Rugs Kurdish

Eastern Anatolia, a late-summer migration. The flocks move up toward the pastures, and the saddle bags go with them.

Kurdish rugs and weaving come from women working in wool and goat hair on ground looms. Patchwork kilims, pieced from fragments of older flatweaves, read like abstract paintings in plaid, stripes and hooked motifs. Tent-surround hangings strung with cowrie talismans guarded a household; soumak double saddle bags carried its belongings. The colors are madder, walnut brown, indigo and undyed wool.

Lay a patchwork kilim across a study floor. Rough texture, quiet color.
