Game Tables
Click of tiles, a Sunday evening, someone shuffling. Game tables carry the long history of play across Asia and Europe. Chinese mahjong tables have shallow drawers on each side for tiles and counters; Indian game tables are inlaid with camel bone, horn and ebony in geometric patterns; square tables come with matching drum-form stools for cards or chess. Parquetry consoles and desks on turned legs, nineteenth and twentieth century, show careful veneer work in oak and other woods.
Contemporary designs such as the Iwari game table add leather inset tops and cup holders. A square table with four stools in a library corner, a bone-inlaid table under a reading lamp, a mahjong table between two armchairs: the room is ready for an evening, and so, presumably, are you.
In the collection now: Indonesian Wood Square Table, Chinese Mahjong Table with 6 Drawers, and Chinese Table with 4 Drum-Form Stools (Set).
