Frames
India, Morocco, Italy, Mexico: four ways of holding a picture. Antique and vintage frames come in carved wood, gilt gesso, hammered silver and inlaid bone. Indian frames clad in repoussé silver, Moroccan frames worked in painted cedar and camel bone, Italian giltwood with burnished corners and Mexican tin frames punched by hand each carry the craft of their place. An empty frame hung alone becomes an object; filled with an old photograph, a botanical print or a fragment of textile, it gives a picture a past. Layered up a stairwell or propped along steel shelving, mixed frames of different woods and metals read as one surface.
In the collection now: Bennett 8x10 Frame, Ogee 4x6 Frame, and Chapman 8x10 Frame.
