Floor Lamps

A reading chair, a stem of brass, and the lamp stands where the reader’s eyes need it. Floor lamps come in brass, iron, bronze and turned wood: swing-arm reading lamps, tall torchères, tripod lamps and lamps converted from antique candlestands and carved columns. Indian brass oil-lamp stands, Italian and Spanish altar candlesticks in carved wood, French bronze and mid-century brass all rise to the height of a seated reader and throw light across a book or up a wall. Silhouette counts as much as light. A slender iron stem against a dark painted wall, or a tall carved column beside a sofa, adds a vertical line to a room.
